AI contract review: how to understand a contract and know what to ask
By the ChatGBot Team · Published November 2, 2026
AI contract review works best as a reading aid: paste the contract or upload it as a PDF, ask for plain-English explanations, and leave with a list of questions for the other party or your lawyer. It is not legal advice and it cannot tell you a contract is safe to sign, but it can make ten pages of dense wording much easier to face.

Two ground rules. First, an AI answer is not legal advice. If the contract involves real money, your job, your home or your business, have a lawyer check it. Second, be careful with confidential documents. Remove names, account numbers and pricing where you can, check whether an NDA or your employer's policy allows it, and read our notes on how safe AI chats are with your data. If you cannot share it, do not upload it.
Reviewing a contract in an AI chat, step by step
- Redact the sensitive details.
- Paste the text, or upload the file if your app supports chatting with a PDF.
- Say who you are in the deal, and which country or state applies.
- Ask for a summary first, then go clause by clause.
- Turn what you learn into written questions, and take them to the other party or a lawyer.
Prompts to copy
Prompt: I am the [tenant / freelancer / employee] in this contract, based in [location]. Explain it in plain English: what I must do, what I get, what it costs me, and how it ends. Quote the section number for each point. Contract: [paste text]
Prompt: List every clause that could cost me money or limit me later, such as auto-renewal, termination fees, liability, non-compete and exclusivity. For each one, quote the wording and explain the worst realistic outcome. Contract: [paste text]
Prompt: Write [8] questions I should ask [the landlord / the client / a lawyer] before signing, ordered by importance. Point out anything that seems missing from the contract, and tell me where you are unsure.
Prompt: Explain section [number] as if I had never read a contract. Then give me one polite sentence I could use to ask for a change to it.
What a useful answer looks like
Suppose a software agreement says: "This Agreement renews automatically for successive 12-month terms unless either party gives 60 days' written notice." A good reply reads like this:
Meaning: If you do nothing, you are committed to another full year. To leave, you must tell them in writing at least 60 days before the term ends.
Why it matters: Missing the date could mean paying for a year you did not want.
Ask them: "Can we shorten notice to 30 days? Does email count as written notice?"
Notice what it does not say. It never claims the clause is illegal or that you should refuse to sign. Be wary of answers that do.
Better questions, and where to stay skeptical
- Ask for quotes. Exact wording and section numbers let you check each claim yourself.
- Name the location. Contract rules differ widely between places, and AI may assume the wrong one.
- Read the original. AI can misread a clause, miss a linked document, or state a law that does not apply to you or has changed.
- Treat silence carefully. A short list of risks does not prove the contract has no others.
For long documents, an AI summary is a starting point, never a replacement for reading the parts that bind you.
Contract software or a general AI chat?
| Contract review software | General AI chat | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Legal and business teams reviewing many contracts | One person trying to understand one document |
| How you work | Set workflows, often with playbooks and templates | You ask questions in your own words |
| Trade-off | More structure, more setup | Flexible, but you steer it and check it |

Doing this in ChatGBot
ChatGBot is a general chat, so the result comes from your prompts. It is a paid app where one subscription covers GPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM, with PDF chat included. Run the same question on two models in one chat, compare their readings, and look closely wherever they disagree. A disagreement is often the best question to bring to your lawyer.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI review a contract for me?
It can explain the wording, flag clauses worth a closer look and suggest questions. It cannot replace a lawyer, and it can make mistakes, so check anything important.
Is AI contract review legal advice?
No. Treat it as help with understanding a document. For decisions with real consequences, speak to a qualified lawyer in your location.
Is it safe to upload a contract to an AI chat?
It depends on the document and on the provider's privacy terms. Remove sensitive details first, and do not upload anything an NDA or company policy forbids you to share.
Can AI tell me if a clause is enforceable?
Only in general terms. Enforceability depends on local law and the facts, so treat that kind of answer as a question for a lawyer.
What contracts is this most useful for?
Everyday ones such as leases, freelance agreements, job offers and software terms, where you mainly need to understand what you are agreeing to.
