AI lesson plan generator: draft a lesson in minutes and keep it yours

By the ChatGBot Team · Published November 2, 2026

You can use any AI chat as a lesson plan generator: give it your grade, topic, standard, time and class details, and it returns a draft to edit almost right away. The draft is only a start. You know your students, so you stay in charge of the facts, the pacing and the fit.

From blank page to usable draft in five moves

  1. Give the basics: grade, subject, topic, lesson length and the standard or objective.
  2. Describe the room: mixed abilities, English learners, what they covered last week, what materials you have.
  3. Ask for a timed plan, not just a list of ideas.
  4. Push back: "too much teacher talk," "make the starter shorter," "no devices."
  5. Check and adapt it before it goes anywhere near your students.

Teacher prompts ready to paste

Prompt: Write a [45]-minute lesson plan for [grade] [subject] on [topic]. Objective: [objective or standard]. Students already know [prior knowledge]. Include a starter, direct instruction, guided practice, independent work and an exit ticket, with minutes for each part.

Prompt: Adapt this lesson for a class with [number] students reading below grade level and [number] English learners. Keep the objective the same. Give me specific supports, not general advice. Lesson: [paste plan]

Prompt: Write [5] exit ticket questions on [topic] for [grade], from easy to hard, with answers. For each one, name the misconception a wrong answer would reveal.

Prompt: I have [30] minutes, no projector and [number] students. Suggest three hands-on ways to teach [topic]. For each, list the materials and the most likely thing to go wrong.

A sample: ratios for grade 6

Here is the kind of output worth keeping from a prompt about introducing ratios in 45 minutes:

TimeActivity
5 minStarter: a lemonade recipe uses 2 cups of lemon juice and 6 cups of water. How would you describe that mix to a friend?
10 minTeach: ratio language, then write 2:6 and simplify it to 1:3. Model two more examples.
15 minPairs: scale recipes up and down, then explain why 3:9 tastes the same as 1:3.
10 minIndependent: six practice problems, the last two written as stories.
5 minExit ticket: a class has 8 boys and 12 girls. Write the ratio of boys to girls in simplest form. (Answer: 2:3)

It works because the minutes add up, the context is concrete and the exit ticket tests exactly what was taught. You would still swap the recipe if lemonade means nothing to your class.

Your review checklist

  • Facts: check every date, definition and worked answer. AI can state errors with confidence, and math answers need redoing by hand.
  • Standards: if it cites a standard code, look it up. Codes can be wrong or invented.
  • Timing: AI tends to be optimistic. Would your group really finish that in 15 minutes?
  • Fit: reading level, cultural references, and what your students actually find hard.
  • Privacy: describe needs in general terms. Do not paste student names or records.

The more detail you give, the less you fix later. Our guide to prompts explains why, and the roundup of the best AI for teachers looks at other classroom tasks too.

Teacher-specific generators vs a general chat

Tools built for teachers often give you forms, ready templates and school-friendly layouts, which can suit you if you want consistent formats with little typing. A general AI chat has no forms, so you describe what you want, but you can have a conversation with it, change anything, and use it for the rest of your day: a quiz, a slide outline, or a simpler reading passage. Neither one knows your class. That part stays with you.

Using ChatGBot for lesson planning

ChatGBot is a paid general chat with GPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM under one subscription, and you get your plan by prompting. The useful bit is switching models in the same chat. Paste your prompt, read the plan, then run it on a second model. One may give better activities and the other clearer timing, so keep the better answer or combine the best parts. You can also upload a curriculum PDF and ask questions about it.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI write a full lesson plan?

Yes, it can draft a complete plan with timings, activities and assessments. Treat it as a first draft and check it against your standards and your class.

Will an AI lesson plan match my state standards?

Only if you tell it which standards to use, and even then you should verify them. AI can quote standard codes wrongly, so check against the official document.

How do I make the plan less generic?

Add real details: what students already know, where they struggle, your materials and your time limit. Then ask for changes in follow-up messages.

Can I use AI to differentiate a lesson?

Yes. Paste your plan and ask for supports for specific groups, such as English learners or students who finish early. Review them, since you know what each student needs.

Is it OK to share student information with AI?

Avoid names, grades and records. Describe needs in general terms, and follow your school's rules on AI tools.

Ready to try it yourself?

Pick the lesson you are least looking forward to planning and paste the first prompt. You will soon have something to edit, and the final call stays yours.
