AI outline generator: build a clear structure for any essay, post, report or deck

By the ChatGBot Team · Published November 2, 2026

An AI chat can work as an outline generator: tell it your topic, audience, purpose and length, and ask for a hierarchy of sections with one line on what each must prove. The value is in what you do next. An outline is cheap to change, so argue with it before you write a word.

Your first outline in four steps

  1. Dump what you have. Topic, assignment brief, rough notes, sources, even half an opinion.
  2. Ask for options, not one answer. Three different structures show you choices you would not have seen.
  3. Choose one and interrogate it. What is weak? What is missing? What should be cut?
  4. Expand one section at a time, adding your own evidence as you go.

Pick the prompt that matches what you are writing

Essay

Prompt: I am writing a [length] [argumentative / analytical] essay for [class or level] on [topic]. My rough position is [position]. Give me three possible thesis statements and an outline for the strongest one. Each body section should have a claim, the type of evidence it needs, and the counterargument to address.

Blog post

Prompt: Outline a [word count] blog post for [audience] who want to [goal]. Use the question they would search as the starting point. For each H2, tell me what the reader should be able to do after reading it. Flag sections where I need my own examples.

Report

Prompt: Outline a report for [decision maker] on [subject]. They need to decide [decision]. Start with an executive summary and recommendation, then findings, options, risks and next steps. List the data I need to collect for each section. My notes: [paste]

Presentation

Prompt: Outline a [10]-minute talk on [topic] for [audience]. Give me one slide per main idea, with a headline that states the point, a suggested visual, and one sentence of what I say. End with the one thing they should remember.

Example: a school start-time essay

From the essay prompt, with the topic "should high schools start later?", a good result looks like this:

  1. Introduction. Hook from a typical 6 a.m. alarm. Thesis: high schools should start later because the benefits to sleep and learning outweigh the scheduling costs.
  2. Teen sleep patterns. Claim: early starts clash with how teenagers sleep. Evidence needed: health or sleep research.
  3. Effects on learning. Claim: tired students learn less. Evidence needed: a study of a district that changed its start time.
  4. The strongest objection. Buses, sports and parents' work hours. Response: what changes would limit these costs?
  5. Conclusion. Return to the alarm, then a concrete recommendation.

It says what evidence is needed without pretending to have it. You find the actual sources, which leads to the main warning below.

Making it better, and what to check

  • Bring your own angle. Without one, you get a safe, predictable structure. Tell it what you believe and what you have seen.
  • Ask "what would a critic say?" It is a quick way to spot weak points.
  • Test the order. Ask whether a section could be moved or dropped without any loss.
  • Verify every source. AI can invent studies and citations. Our best AI for research guide is a good next read.
  • Follow your school's rules. Some allow outlining with AI and some do not, so check first, and read up on how to avoid plagiarism.

Outlining in ChatGBot

ChatGBot is a paid general chat that gives you GPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM on one subscription, and you get your outline by prompting. Paste your prompt into one model, then switch to another in the same chat and send it again. Different models often structure the same topic differently, so keep the better answer or take the best sections from each. If your notes are in a PDF, you can upload it and ask for an outline from that. Web search can also help when a topic is recent.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI outline generator?

It is any AI tool that turns a topic and some details into a structured list of sections. A general AI chat can do this if you describe what you need.

Is using AI to outline an essay cheating?

It depends on your school or teacher, so check the policy. Using it to plan is often treated differently from having it write the work, but rules vary.

How detailed should my prompt be?

Include the topic, audience, purpose, length and your own point of view. The more specific you are, the less generic the outline will be.

Can AI find the sources for my outline?

It can suggest what evidence to look for, but it may invent citations. Find each source yourself and confirm that it says what you are claiming.

Can I turn an outline into slides or a full draft?

Yes. Ask for one section at a time, and add your own examples and evidence so the final piece sounds like you.

Ready to try it yourself?

Paste your topic into the prompt that fits and ask for three structures. Picking the best of three is far easier than starting from nothing.
