GPT-6 Pro parallel agents: what the new ChatGPT update actually does
By the ChatGBot Team · Published October 20, 2026
OpenAI has rolled out an update to GPT-6 Pro inside ChatGPT that changes how big tasks get done. Instead of one model working step by step, the Pro tier can now split a request into parts and hand them to several agents that run in parallel, while you watch their progress. It is one of the more practical upgrades this year, and also one of the most talked about. Here is what we know so far, and what is still unclear.

According to OpenAI's announcement around October 16, the update brings three things to Pro users:
- Parallel agents. A large task, such as researching a market or reviewing a long codebase, is broken into sub-tasks. Separate agents work on them at the same time and the results are merged at the end.
- Visible progress. ChatGPT shows what each agent is doing, so you can follow along instead of waiting on a blank screen.
- Faster replies and better tool use. OpenAI says responses are quicker and that the model is more reliable when it calls plugins, browses or runs code.
OpenAI has not shared benchmark numbers or speed figures for this update, so treat claims about exact gains with caution. Naming is also a little messy: some coverage calls it "GPT-6 Astra Pro", others simply "GPT-6 Pro". If you want the background on the base model, read our GPT-6 Astra guide.
How parallel agents work
Think of it as a small team instead of a single assistant. A coordinator plans the work, assigns pieces to agents, and checks the pieces against each other before giving you one answer. This is the same idea behind most AI agents, but running several at once cuts the waiting time on long jobs.
Where it helps most:
- Research with many sources, such as comparing ten products or summarizing a stack of reports.
- Coding tasks that touch several files at once.
- Planning work with independent parts, like a trip, an event or a content calendar.
Where it helps less: short questions, quick rewrites and casual chat. For those, a single fast model is usually enough, and often cheaper.
Who gets it and what it costs
The parallel agent feature is part of the ChatGPT Pro plan, which is OpenAI's most expensive consumer tier. Plus and free users do not get the full version at launch. If you only need strong everyday answers, you do not need Pro to get good results from GPT models.
GPT-6 Pro vs other top models
Parallel agents are a workflow feature, not a guarantee of better answers. For writing, Claude is still a favorite for tone and long documents. DeepSeek is known for strong reasoning at a low cost. Many people find that the best AI depends on the task, which is why using several models side by side is often smarter than paying for one premium tier.
With ChatGBot you can ask the same question to GPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM in one place and keep the answer that works best.
Frequently asked questions
What is new in GPT-6 Pro?
The latest update lets GPT-6 Pro split a large task across several agents that work in parallel, shows their progress, and improves speed and tool use, according to OpenAI.
Do I need ChatGPT Pro to use parallel agents?
Yes. At launch, the parallel agent feature is available on the ChatGPT Pro plan only.
Is GPT-6 Pro faster than before?
OpenAI says responses are faster, but it has not published exact speed or benchmark figures for this update.
Is GPT-6 Pro the same as GPT-6 Astra Pro?
Coverage uses both names. Both refer to the Pro tier of OpenAI's GPT-6 family in ChatGPT.
Can I compare GPT with other models?
Yes. ChatGBot lets you use GPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Qwen and GLM in one app with one subscription.
Ready to try it yourself?
Parallel agents are a strong sign of where AI is heading: less chatting, more getting work done. You do not need the most expensive plan to benefit. Try GPT next to Claude and DeepSeek in ChatGBot and see which one handles your task best.
