OpenAI Dots: Always-On AI Agents, Explained
By ChatGBot · October 2, 2026
At DevDay 2026, OpenAI introduced Dots, a new kind of AI that does not wait for you to type. A Dot is an always-on agent with its own cloud computer and browser, built to take on ongoing tasks and keep working in the background. Here is what they are, what they can do, and who gets them.

A Dot is an always-on agent coworker. Unlike a normal chatbot that sits idle until you send a message, a Dot stays active and owns a task from start to finish. Each one runs on GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's top model, and works from its own cloud computer and browser, so it can click, type, and browse like a person would. New to the family? See what is GPT-4o.
What Dots can do
- Connect to 4,000+ apps. Each Dot can plug into the tools you already use and act inside them.
- Work where you work. You talk to your agents through ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, with text messaging planned later.
- Run long tasks. Because they are always on, Dots are built for multi-step work that takes time, not one-off answers.
- Teams of Dots. OpenAI says groups of Dots will eventually collaborate on bigger jobs together.
Who gets Dots and what it costs
Your first Dot is included in a Pro or Business Premium plan at no extra cost, with higher usage limits in the first month. The Pro rollout excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK for now; Business Premium users get Dots in all supported ChatGPT regions.
Why it matters
Dots push AI from a tool you prompt toward a coworker that owns outcomes. It lands in the same busy stretch as GPT-6.1 Sol and a wave of new models, and the theme is clear: agents that act, not just chat. For the full month, see our September 2026 AI model releases roundup.
